A Post for the Oldies
This is a post for anyone 55+. If you have been strength training for months or years, you know just how important it is for health and longevity. But what are some good markers that indicate you will live a long, happy life?
1. Grip strength - The stronger your grip, your longer your life. You should be able to hang from a chin up bar for 45-60 seconds. This is a great indicator of longevity.
2. Strong bones - Your doc has not told you to start worrying about osteoporosis. No worthless calcium supplements, no pills or potions, just strong bones from loading the skeleton in a heavy, methodical way. If you lift heavy and your bones are still trending toward osteoporosis, increase vitamin d3 and k2 intake and stop eating sugar and vegetables right away.
3. Moving better than your peers - It is a sad state of affairs for our elderly out there. The lack of focus on nutrition and strength training has made a generation of under-muscled medication addicts. Especially if you are on a statin, and that is the single most prescribed drug in the world, you are doing damage to your hormones, muscles, and bones. Strength training teaches you that getting up and getting moving will help with the aches and pains that can accompany improper aging.
4. Strong heart - Your heart can be a good indicator of longevity as well, we want your cardio to be acceptable, but don't overdo it. Focus on getting your 6000 steps per day no matter what and try to get about 10-20 minutes of HIIT (high intensity interval training) once or twice a week.
5. Actually wanting to do stuff - A lot of times, a poor diet and no physical activity often lead to a worse diet and a sedentary lifestyle. These are 2 surefire ways to die sooner, and keep the dying process looooong and painful. If you feel like you want to take your walks and strength train and feel 20 years younger, you will actually do it, instead of fighting your lack of motivation and depression. The fact that it is good for you will motivate you for only so long, you must find the INNER motivation. Go full carnivore for 2 weeks and you will notice you actually WANT to hit the gym, you can't sit still, and your joints don't hurt anymore.
There is a saying in the "gym" culture: "The best time to start training is last year, the second best time is RIGHT NOW." No matter how old you are, the Go Fit Yourself nutrition and training lifestyle will prolong your life, will eliminate the aches and pains that make working out seem like an impossibility right now, and it will light a fire in your belly that you haven't felt in many years. So if you are 63 and you have been "training" for years, or you are 59 and have never seen the inside of a gym, you must do yourself the favor of hitting the weights safely and systematically TODAY.
Eliminate carbs from your diet, increase your fatty meat consumption, and lift weights. It is THAT simple to turn back (or stop) the hands of time. This lifestyle works for everyone from the age of 0 to 125.
